Moonstone is a variety of the mineral orthoclase, which has the chemical formula(NaKAl)Si3O8.

Na-Sodium 1 atom

K-Potassium 1 atom

Al-Aluminum 1 atom

Si-Silicon 3 atoms

O-Oxygen 8 atoms.

The color and sheen of moonstone are primarily achieved through two processes:

1. Crystal Structure: Moonstone has crystals arranged in a specific way that allows light to refract and reflect within the stone. This internal arrangement creates the characteristic “schiller” or “adularescence”, which is the stone’s ability to appear to have a glow or shine that changes depending on the angle of the light.

2. Composition and Variations: Different varieties of moonstone can contain various inclusions or other minerals, such as albite or labradorite, which can influence its color. Some moonstones exhibit blue or green hues depending on the inclusions and the amount of light that passes through them.

These processes work together to give moonstone its unique and appealing appearance.

The name of the stone comes from its appearance, which resembles the light of the moon. The characteristic sheen and colorplay that occur when light refracts and reflects within the stone resemble the glow and brightness of the lunar surface. This association with the moon has led to the use of the term “moon” in the stone’s name.

Moonstone is mined in various areas in the USA, New Zealand, Mauritius, and India.
